Michael Johnson to retire
|
SUPERSTAR sprinter Michael Johnson said on Tuesday he plans to retire after this summer's Goodwill Games in Australia, capping a career that included five Olympic and nine World Championship gold medals.
Johnson, world recordholder of the 200 and 400-metre events, told reporters that he never wanted to “be an athlete who didn't leave when it was time”.
The 33-year-old American said he still loves competing and running, but that he has achieved everything “I ever wanted”.
Johnson said he plans to compete in the Goodwill Games in Brisbane in August where he will spend a lot of time with the fans and “officially say goodbye”.
He made the remarks after speaking at a seminar organized by the US-based e-commerce system provider Ariba in Hong Kong.
Johnson did not compete in the recently concluded Indoor World Championships in Portugal.
He became the first male runner to win both the 200 and 400 at the same Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.
Johnson defended his 400-metre title in last year's Sydney Games and also anchored the US 1,600-metre relay team to victory. (SD-Agencies)
