AROUND half a million local students and teachers have been given accident insurance, under an agreement signed by the Shenzhen Education Development Foundation and Shenzhen Ping'an Insurance last week.
The two parties will jointly develop safety education among students for the first time, according to the agreement.
Luo Xiaoling of the foundation said a package of safety education plan will be initiated among students to enhance their safety awareness.
Reading materials and coaches will be sent to schools to guide students' safety education in extracurricular activities.
Luo said it is necessary to develop safety education among students, since casualties in traffic and outdoor activities including swimming and picnics have been rising in recent years.
It was told the insurance company closed 246 compensation cases concerned with local students, an increase of 53.5 per cent over the previous year. The compensation charges stood at 1.6 million yuan, up 30 per cent over the previous year.
According to the agreement, the insurer will simplify compensatory procedures for both teachers and students when accidents arise.
The foundation started to buy insurance for the city's students six years ago.
