‘I am a born policeman'

Han Ximin
CAI YUXUAN, an ordinary member of Shenzhen's Riot Police Detachment, is the city resident who was recommended to attend the Public Security Departments National Wrestling Competition to be held next month in Guangdong Province.
On departure for special training in Guangzhou last week, the 25-year-old said at an interview that he was born to be a policeman.
"I don't know what job I can do except be a policeman, for I was born to be a policeman and want to work in the police force for the rest of my life," said Cai.
Cai's dream not only came true, but he also found himself chosen to become a member of the elite Shenzhen Riot Police Detachment in 1997 in recognition of his excellent skills in shooting and wrestling during his service with the Shandong Armed Police Division.
“I have a special feeling towards guns, regarding them as a part of my body," said Cai. He added that he can tell how many bullets are in a clip just by feeling its weight in his hand.
At a skill contest for the country's patrol police and riot squads organized by the Ministry of Public Security last October, Cai Yuxuan took home the championship in the shooting event.
Cai is a sniper in the quad, which means shooting at distances of 100 to 150 metres with a rifle equipped with a telescopic sight. “You must be 100 per cent sure before shooting the target," said Cai.
“I have always thought that an innocent and guilty guy have different magnetic fields which send different information. If I feel nervous when approaching a corner, there must be someone hiding behind it," Cai added.
Cai can't remember the number of times he has participated in busts. But he can't forget a round-up action in connection with a murder case at midnight last March in Buji Township, Longgang District. That hectic night, he had to decide in a mere 10th of a second whether a man lived or died.
Cai was informed that the suspect had a gun. He kicked the door open and found a man in a corner. With only 0.1 second to think, Cai lowered his gun for he had the feeling that the man was not the criminal. Later his instincts were proven correct when it was discovered that the wanted man had escaped before the police arrived.
“My instincts tell me to shoot or not in emergencies when we have almost no time to judge," said Cai. Yet those instincts come from seven years of psychological and physical training. According to Cai, never hurting an innocent civilian and never letting a criminal go free are the only correct answers.
Shooting, wrestling, climbing and stunt-driving have been routines in Cai's life.
Cai is always busy, especially during holidays. Having been unable to visit his parents during the Spring Festival for the past seven years, his greatest hope now is to meet his parents in Shenzhen.
