China hops aboard 3G bandwagon

CELLULAR phones are about to be taken into a revolutionary world of broadband access, and while all eyes are currently focused on Japan, which will be the first nation to launch the new services -- so-called third generation or 3G service -- China is also headed down that road. Here in Shenzhen, the ZTE Corporation recently demonstrated its own, domestically-developed third-generation mobile solution CDMA2000 1x system at the recent National Mobile Communication Show in Beijing.
The mobile system, an upgraded version of an earlier compatible CDMA (Code Division Multiplexing Access) mobile system, offers 144 kbps of data transmission. This is the first CDMA mobile communication system in China that delivers high-speed transmission of combined voice, video and data to portable phones.
The broadband mobile service will greatly expand the mobile services market, as many of the fixed-line functions are now possible on mobile terminals, according to engineers with ZTE.
In another development, the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) granted ZTE a new licence last week to sell its detachable CDMA phones. This is the first CDMA phone licence granted to a local manufacturer.
The detachable CDMA handset is the first of its kind in the world, according to Zhu Jinwen, vice-president of ZTE.
Earlier the company's CDMA mobile communication system was licensed by MII to be deployed in China. Thus the company is now ready to deploy its complete CDMA system nationwide.
The new mobile system will facilitate a wide variety of new electronic services like mobile banking services.
