‘Golden collars’ flock to fair

Han Ximin
THE dignified and imposing Wuzhou Guesthouse, which has hosted so many important get-togethers in the past, drew a flood of visitors on Saturday, but this time they weren't coming for a press conference or corporate meeting.
With well-written resumes and dressed to the nines, swarms of people from across the city came in search of job opportunities at the guesthouse, where a recruitment meeting for so-called "golden collars" was being held.
They had to wait in line to pass preliminary qualification check by the organizer, Shenzhen Western Market for Human Resources, before they could even enter the hall. According to organizers, "golden collar" refers to a management-level position which usually promises an annual salary of over 80,000 yuan (US$9,600).
Nearly 3,000 such management-level vacancies were offered by 106 enterprises including Midea, Foxconn and TCL.
This is the third time the Midea Group, a household appliance manufacturer in Shunde in the Pearl River Delta region, has recruited prospective candidates at the market. The company needed professionals in venture capital and investment. The group's human resources chief Lian Wenjian said an annual salary of 300,000 yuan is "not a problem" for the right candidate. He hoped to find possible candidates in Shenzhen, one of China's IT powerhouses.
Shao Gang with UTstarcom Co Shenzhen branch, a telecommunication company headquartered in Silicon Valley in the United States, was satisfied with the result. The company desperately needed science and distribution personnel to expand its operations. Shao received 50 resumes in less than an hour.
Though it usually takes time to find the right person for the company's vacancies, Wang Junqi of Foxconn Industrial Group (China Headquarter)'s Human Resources Division said attending the job market has helped build up the company's human resources reserve. The group organized 12 subsidiary enterprises in China to recruit personnel on Saturday's job market here.
Though she only has two years of experience with a local company, Miss Wang, a postgraduate from the Hefei University of Technology,
is confident of finding a well-paid job. She handed in three resumes to companies that interested her. She said the recruitment gathering was very helpful for both workers and employers.
“The number of people attending the market far exceeded the 10,000 people we got last time," said Qiu Chengfu, vice-chairman of the Shenzhen Western Market for Human Resources, adding that it is to be held four times a year.
