Road to HK to be widened
|
THE main road connecting Hong Kong and Shenzhen will be widened, according to the China Daily's weekend report.
It will be widened from the current four metres to six metres, enabling twice as much traffic to travel along it.
The report had it that the current number of vehicles going between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland is 12 million a month, an increase of 12.3 per cent over last year. The average number of pedestrians is about 230,000 a month with 130,000 more in peak times.
“Road widening is not the ultimate solution to the increasing amount of traffic," said Sun Mingyang, director of the Political Policy Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR.
Sun said that the problem has to be solved by a 24-hour Customs service, still under discussion between the two sides, which will allow traffic to travel all through the night.
