Chapter 2
Abbey School
Wednesday, 3.30pm.
"Impressed?" said Tamsyn. "By getting a message from the other side of the room?"
"But I could have been on the other side of the world!" cried Josh. "That's the whole point. It's just as easy to send a message anywhere. Anywhere at all."
Tamsyn nodded. It was impressive. But was it useful?
"Go on, then." It was Josh, nudging (轻推) her from behind.
"Go on what?"
"Reply. Send me a message back. Click on the REPLY button," said Josh, leaning over and pointing at the screen. Tamsyn did as she was told, slightly irritated (生气) that she had to be told, but interested to see what would happen next. As she clicked on the REPLY button the screen simply scrolled Josh's message down so that Tamsyn could type in something herself.
Thank you for your interesting message, Josh. Not exactly "David Copperfield", but pretty good for you!(1)
As she finished, Tamsyn clicked on SEND. Moments later a blip(急而尖的响声) sounded from Josh's computer.
"There you go," said Josh. "It's arrived in my mailbox. And it'll stay there until I look at it. Good, eh?"
Tamsyn laughed. Josh was like a kid with a new toy. "Josh, it's good. But I'll take a book any day(2).
With a big grin on his face, Josh sat down next to her. "So it's a good book you want, is it? Right, watch this."
Quickly he returned to the opening menu. This time he clicked on ARTS.
"Think of this as digging deeper and deeper into a mound of information," said Josh as yet another menu came up. This one full of text with some words underlined. He clicked on a line reading "A Catalogue of Electronic Texts on the Internet". This time, a list of book titles came on the screen. Tamsyn had just enough time to realize that she was looking at a list of classics before Josh clicked again. Within 10 seconds, no more, up onto the screen came a page of text.
"But-that's…" began Tamsyn.
"David Copperfield," laughed Josh. "Every page of it if you care to scroll through it!"

1. Not exactly……for you!虽然不完全像《大卫·科波菲尔》那本书那样有趣，可你干得挺不错。
2. But I'll……any day. 不过我想随时拿着本书看。
