THE Second Session of the Third Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress got underway yesterday.
On behalf of the local government, Mayor Yu Youjun issued a work report to the conference.
Yu pointed out there is still much room for improvement in enhancing working efficiency, preventing financial risks, curbing air and water pollution, normalizing market order, streamlining governmental organs and luring qualified personnel.
“We should be confident and take resolute measures to solve these problems this year,” Yu said.
In 2001, Shenzhen is expected to achieve 188 billion yuan (US$22.56 billion) in gross domestic product (GDP) and 295 billion yuan in total industrial output.
To make these goals attainable, the emphasis of the reform will be put on the development of infrastructure construction, education at various levels, information technology, foreign trade, urban planning, the tertiary sector, container handling capacity and high and new technologies.
“The above-mentioned sectors will receive substantial investment to prop up the city's scheduled economic growth rate,” Yu said.
Having made a comprehensive analysis of the city's present situation, Yu said Shenzhen will achieve basic modernization during the 10th Five-Year Plan period.
By the end of 2005, the city's gross domestic product and total industrial output are expected to reach 300 billion yuan and 500 billion yuan respectively. Moreover, the city's total imports and exports will also surpass US$85 billion by then.
Two other work reports respectively submitted by the Shenzhen Municipal Planning Bureau and Shenzhen Municipal Finance Bureau were also reviewed by deputies yesterday.
