Explorers brave desert
|
TEN Chinese recently successfully crossed the Badain Jaran Desert in northwest China, the country's second and world's fourth largest desert, from south to north by vehicles in nine days.
This is the first known expedition to that desert, which is called the "sea of death."
The members of the expedition team came from Gansu Province and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. A vehicle was abandoned in the desert during the expedition because of a malfunction.
The expedition team took photos and videos, and collected precious data about the desert.
The Badain Jaran Desert, with an area of 49,200 square kilometres, is situated in the centre of the Alxa Desert in Gansu. Drifting sand dunes constitute 83 per cent of its total area. The central part consists of dense, tall sand dunes, most of which are 200-300 metres high. Some tower as high as 400 metres.
