VISITING British Construction Minister Beverley Hughes MP yesterday formally opened the new commercial offices of the British Consulate-General in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong Province.
Ms Hughes, who came to Guangzhou as head of the first minister-level British construction delegation to Guangzhou, said, “The British Government recognizes the importance of Guangdong and its economy, not just within China, but as a powerful emerging economy within the whole Asian region. The new offices demonstrate the British Government's commitment to developing a closer and more productive relationship with South China, and especially Guangdong."
Over the last four years, Britain has strengthened its commercial position in Guangzhou as the Consulate-General has encouraged more British companies to explore the growing number of business opportunities in the region.
Eighteen British trade delegations are scheduled to visit Guangzhou this year. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for a large British presence at this year's China Hi-Tech Fair in Shenzhen.
