Multithreading: Performing more than one task in an application at the same time. For example, your computer could calculate spreadsheet values while you continue to enter data into that spreadsheet. OS/2 has multithreading capabilities. Applications must be written according to certain specifications to have multithreading capabilities.
NetBIOS: Network Basic Input/Output System. A system that provides a session layer interface between network applications running on a PC and the underlying protocol software of the transport and network layers.
NETBUI: The NetBIOS Extended User Interface. This is the transport layer driver frequently used by a LAN Manager.
NetWare: A network operating system developed by Novell.
Network: A group of computers connected by cables or other means that use software to exchange information and share equipment like printers and disk drives.
Network Address: A unique number associated with a host that identifies it to other hosts during network transactions.
NFS: Network File System. A protocol developed by Sun Microsystems that uses IP so computers can access each other's file systems as if they were in a local network.
NIC: Network Information Centre. The NIC at SRI international in Menlo Park, CA assigns IP addresses and network numbers per request. The number is assigned with respect to the number of host devices on the network.
Node: A personal computer hooked up to a network. Any network station.
