THE Second Session of the Third Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress (MPC) ended on Saturday.
The five-day session endorsed Mayor Yu Youjun's government report, the MPC Standing Committee's annual report presented by Zhang Yuqing, plus reports on the implementation of the 2000 and 2001 plans for economic and social development, the 2000 budget and this year's draft budget.
The deputies regarded Yu's government report to be conscientious and the goals set for this year and the 10th Five-Year Plan period wholly practical and feasible.
According to Yu's report, Shenzhen will achieve 188 billion yuan (US$22.56 billion) of gross domestic product (GDP) and 285 billion yuan of total industrial output value this year.
By 2005 (the last year of the 10th Five-Year Plan period), Shenzhen is expected to have achieved basic modernization and its gross domestic product and total industrial output value are expected to reach 300 billion yuan and 500 billion yuan respectively. Moreover, the city's total imports and exports will also surpass US$85 billion by then.
To make these goals attainable, the city will put still more emphasis on the development of infrastructure construction, foreign trade, education at various levels, urban planning, the tertiary sector, container handling capacity and high and new technologies.
Two other work reports separately submitted by the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court and Municipal People's Procuratorate were also reviewed and passed at the session on Saturday.
