Chinese film showcased

SPRING has arrived, and love is in the air. Well, perhaps not, but in Shenzhen, movies are definitely on the mind. A whirlwind of activity is surrounding the eighth session of the Academy Award Appraisal of Chinese cinema, which began on April first. It may not have the big money and international glamour of its Hollywood equivalent, but top Chinese stars will be coming to Shenzhen to discuss their films.
A number of well-known filmmakers, such as Yu Yang, Wang Tiecheng, Jiang Wen and Pan Hong, plus others, have signed on to serve as judges for the awards. They will spend the next five days in Shenzhen screening movies. Later, they will choose the most outstanding actors and actresses in China.
The Academy Award Appraisal started in 1985 and is held every two years. The award ceremony will be held in September, along with a series of activities, such as symposiums, performances by film stars and real-time interviews and so forth.
It is the top award in the domestic film industry, according to Yu Yang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Cinema Performing Art Academy of China.
"Being distinct from other nationally established awards, the Academy Award is judged by filmmakers while ignoring the gender and positions of roles of performers," Yu Yang told the media.
In other words, all performers are equal in the face of this award, a fact which makes it perhaps the most coveted in China.
