Cabinet
NAIROBI: President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday sacked his entire cabinet, according to a report reaching here from Kinshasa. The outgoing ministers are charged with the care-taking duties until the nomination of a new cabinet, said the report which quoted a statement from Cabinet Chief Theophile Mbemba as saying that all State visits by the cabinet ministers have been suspended, except those already in progress.
Foot-and-mouth
LONDON: The daily tally of new-found foot-and-mouth cases could be down to single figures by the time of Britain's general election in early June, the government's chief scientific adviser said on Wednesday. The government's mass slaughter policy "is beginning to bite", said the adviser. But it was "vitally important" to continue the policy of achieving culls within 24 hours on infected farms and 48 hours on neighbouring farms, he stressed.
Cults
TOKYO: A follower of the AUM Shinrikyo (supreme truth) cult was arrested yesterday on suspicion of falsifying documents in connection with an AUM-run company in 1999, Japanese police said.
Estrada
MANILA: Ousted Philippine President Joseph Estrada said yesterday that he would file a new appeal with the Supreme Court in a long shot to get his presidency back. But he conceded the chance of convincing the court to change its mind and reinstate him -- thus making him immune from prosecution -- was slim.
