Miami to host Latin Grammy awards
|
MIAMI, the glitzy Florida gateway to Latin America, has been picked to host this year's Latin Grammy music awards, recording industry officials said on Wednesday.
The announcement came as little surprise after weeks of lobbying by Miami, widely viewed as the capital of Latin music, to host the awards on September 12.
The first Latin Grammy awards were held in Los Angeles last year.
"This will give us the opportunity once again to showcase Miami-Dade County and the city of Miami to the world," said county Mayor Alex Penelas. He added the county stood to gain an estimated US$35 million to US$40 million from the event.
It will also "confirm and cement even harder Miami's position in the international community and as the Latin music capital of the world," he told a news conference.
Miami, home to recording icons Ricky Martin, Julio Iglesias and Gloria Estefan and to the Latin American headquarters of Sony Music and MTV and scores of other music labels, was passed over for the awards last year largely because of the city's anti-Cuba policies.
Organizers of the Latin Grammy's say it will be broadcast, and will be seen in more than 120 countries.
