NIC: Network Information Centre. The NIC at SRI international in Menlo Park, CA assigns IP addresses and network numbers per request. The number is assigned with respect to the number of host devices on the network.
Notebook: Small compact computer that is smaller than a portable computer. Common measurements are approximately 8.5 x 11 inches.
Object Linking and Embedding (OLE): A proprietary software system from Microsoft that allows applications to transfer and share information. When a change is made to a shared object in the original application, any document that contains that object is updated automatically to reflect the changes.
Object-Oriented Graphics: Graphic designs that are handled by the computer as mathematically-described shapes, rather than as collections of pixels. Often referred to as drawing as opposed to painting.
Objective C: A programming language based on the C programming language, featuring a greater emphasis on hierarchical design of programs.
Open: To display the contents of a file in an application or to start an application.
Open Architecture: A type of IBM PC and compatible architecture that enables third party manufacturers to produce additional interior add-ons (usually circuit boards), and allows users to easily install these add-ons to their computers.
OpenDoc: An applications and documents standard created by a consortium of Apple, IBM, and Novell personnel. OpenDoc is intended to provide more cross platform and cross application integration by splitting up the components of documents (text, sound, graphics, etc) and providing separate access to each component through modular software.(To be continued)(SD-Agencies)
