Sandstorm batters north
|
A VIOLENT sandstorm has been sweeping most parts of North China since Friday, causing visibility to fall below 50 metres in some areas in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
People in the affected areas complained they could not tell day from night and suffered from serious air pollution with inhalant particles reaching alarming levels.
More than 95 per cent of meteorological stations in Inner Mongolia reported the sandstorm, and called it the most serious one in years.
Wind speed has been clocked at between 17-30 metres per second, reports say.
Meterologists said yesterday the sandstorm was subduing in Inner Mongolia but warned that a new sand storm, caused by a cold current, would hit the areas again today. (SD-Xinhua)
