SZ has high mental illness rate

ABOUT 8,396 local citizens are currently suffering from some form of mental illness, or 0.706 per cent of the city's permanent residents, according to a news release issued by a conference held to mark World Health Day 2001, which fell on Saturday.
The rate of people suffering from mental illness is highest among those suffering from other disabilities in the city, the conference was told.
The rate of mental illness among Children reached 0.132 per cent, much higher than the national average of 0.0025 per cent, according to a survey on handicapped children up to the age of seven.
SZ has among the highest rates of mental illness in the country. Neurosis patients reached 2.713 per cent, much higher than that of other major cities.
Experts from the Kangning Hospital, which specializes in mental illness treatment, called for more attention to mental health in communities, which is the theme of this year's World Health Day.
