Endangered Species----Red wolf
|
A MEDIUM-SIZED, wild canid (犬科动物), the red wolf (赤狼) resembles the coyote (丛林狼) but is larger and more robust.
Its legs and ears are relatively longer than the coyote's. The red wolf's colouration (颜色) is similar to that of the coyote, but the tawny (茶色) element is more pronounced (显著), and the pelage (毛皮) is usually somewhat coarser. This species is slightly smaller than the gray wolf with a more slender and elongated head. Its pelage is shorter and coarser than in any race of its kind.
Red wolves' breeding occurs in February and March, and pups (幼犬) are born in April and May.
Expanding human populations and extensive land clearing initially affected the red wolf in two ways. First and probably foremost, these animals, along with other large predators, were killed in great numbers. Secondly, the extensive clearing of forest and hardwood river bottoms eliminated much of the prime red wolf habitat.
The red wolf was once found throughout the southeastern United States. The present red wolf population of at least 240 exists primarily in captivity, which are located in 22 captive breeding facilities in the United States.
