Geography----Monaco
|
ITS world-class reputation as one of the most luxurious tourist resorts far exceeds its size of about 1.9 sqkm.
Monaco (摩纳哥), the home of the famous casino (赌场) at Monte Carlo (蒙特卡洛), is located along the Mediterranean Sea in the midst of the resort area of French Rivieta. Monaco's tiny territory occupies a set of densely clustered hills and a headland (海角) that looks southward over the Mediterranean. It is an independent principality (公国).
Monaco's climate is warm in summer and mild in winter annual temperatures averaging 16C and with only about 60 days of rainfall.
Most of Monaco's population is composed of French and Italian descendents, and its official language is French. Only about 15 per cent of the people claim Monegasque descent.
The fairy-tale wedding of Prince Rainier III to the American film star Grace Kelly in 1956 made Monaco the focus of international attention. Their son, Albert, became the heir to the throne. In 1982 the princess died in an automobile accident after suffering a stroke while at the wheel. Population (1997 estimate): 30,870.
