Best picture: Marty
Starring: Ernest Borgnine, Betsy Blair, Joe De Santis, Joe Mantell, Esther Minciotti
Synopsis: It is a remake of the 1953 television production about a shy butcher who finds love against all odds.
Marty is a lonely, love-starved butcher approaching middle age. His Italian mother is incessantly urging him to find a nice Italian girl and get married. And then, wonder of wonders, one night Marty meets Clara, a plain chemistry teacher with whom he finds a lot in common. They start to pursue a relationship. However, Marty's mother is suddenly afraid of being left alone, and tries to persuade Marty that Clara's not the girl for him. And Marty's loser friends are also jealous of Marty's new friend. In addition to the pressure from others, they have to face the pressure from their own insecurities.
The film captures perfectly the loneliness of Marty's bachelor life: the disappointment of crushed (破碎的) dreams, the awfulness of dating and the coldness of even family and friends.
