CHINA'S commitment to assisting in the construction of the “e-ASEAN” project is greatly appreciated by all ASEAN nations, an Indonesian official said yesterday, who promised to offer more market opportunities for Shenzhen's telecom products.
Djamhari Sirat, director-general of the Post and Telecommunication Department of Indonesia, made the remarks at the China-ASEAN Information & Communication Technologies Seminar.
The seminar, which is being held in Shenzhen, has drawn more than 100 senior officials and telecom experts from China and nine ASEAN countries (including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) and will last until tomorrow.
“Actually, such a seminar was originally proposed by Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji at the ASEAN-China, Japan and Korea Summit in Singapore last year,” said Sirat. “The proposal won great applause and was quickly accepted by ASEAN leaders.”
The goal of the ongoing seminar in Shenzhen is to improve mutual understanding and explore new fields of co-operation and, in particular, promote the partnership between China and ASEAN nations in info-communication technologies, focusing on the implementation of the “e-ASEAN” project, he said.
According to Sirat, Asia's information infrastructure is expanding rapidly and the gigantic electronic project for ASEAN countries is now in full swing.
“In order to make our purpose attainable, interaction with other countries is very important. We must first learn a lot from China in the fields of fibre optics, digital microwave, data processing, mobile communications, Internet, long distance transmission, broadband and multimedia information networks,” Sirat said.
Meanwhile, Sirat pointed out that the selection of Shenzhen to host the seminar is a strong evidence of China's special attention to the city.
“The seminar will not only promote the image of Shenzhen, but also offer more access for the city's info-communication products to ASEAN countries,” he said.
