TANG SHUWEI, a Senior One student at Shenzhen Experimental School, won the only global award at the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Juvenile Mental Health Theme Drawing and Writing Competition in the age group of 10 to 14. This talented young lady will head for Geneva to read her composition in front of ministers of health from around the world during the WHO Assembly this May .
The composition competition, held by the WHO among youngsters aged six to 18 since last December, was developed at regional, national, and global levels.
Tang's composition, entitled "The injured butterfly", was given the top grade among the over 200 contributions at the national level, and then was recommended as the only entry in the Western Pacific region to the WHO. At the global competition with 70 contestants, her story won out thanks to a graceful and creative writing style.
Her article described her experience with her mentally challenged classmate. She tried to arouse people's attention to handicapped persons using her own observations.
Though reluctant to talk to media for fear of disturbing Tang, Zhu Guohong, her mother, who works for Shenzhen Airlines, said she was very proud of her daughter.
Deeply affected by her Chinese teacher in primary school, the intelligent and calm girl showed a great interest in literary classics and exhibited a gift for writing. In primary school, she won third prize at a national composition competition.
