Water can turn into biocidal wash
|
SCOTTISH scientists said they have developed a system which could turn water, via electrical pulses, into a "biocidal" wash to kill bacteria on fresh foods, the BBC reported on Monday.
Electrical engineers and microbiologists from Strathclyde University believe that what they are developing would significantly reduce the incidence of serious food poisoning outbreaks, the report said.
The scientists have been working together to perfect the system, which can remove or de-activate the deadliest food bugs.
Dr John Anderson of the university said: "We simply take ordinary water and pass gas bubbles through this. And we then subject this to electric current."
"This creates a plasma inside it, and turns the water into a highly biocidal liquid that kills micro-organisms. This is a very effective way of treating food surfaces and food contact areas," he said.(Xinhua)
