China luanches anti-crime campaign

BEIJING and several other major cities launched simultaneous operations on Wednesday in China's ongoing crackdown on crime.
Twenty-one police bureaus and people's courts at various levels in Beijing gathered together to publicly announce the arrest of criminal suspects and the imprisonment of convicted criminals.
An official in charge of Beijing's public security said that Beijing police have focused on striking hard against gang-related crime since the beginning of this year. He said that 3.1 per cent fewer criminal cases occurred during the first quarter of this year compared with the same period of last year.
The police were more efficient in investigations, he noted, as 17.9 per cent more cases have been investigated and criminal suspects arrested.
In Shenyang, capital city of Northeast China's Liaoning Province, 100 criminal suspects were arrested in connection with a string of murders, robberies, rapes and other criminal activities.
Police in Guangdong Province in South China vowed to smash organized crime rings which are affiliated with gangs in the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions, and Taiwan Province, in the coming three months.
The police will also make more efforts to crack down on pornography, gambling and drug-related crimes.
Fuzhou, provincial capital of East China's Fujian, arrested 100 people suspected of murder, robbery, kidnapping, blackmail, drug trafficking, and illegally entering other countries. Another 21 criminals were sentenced to death or imprisonment.
Xi'an, capital city of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, executed 10 criminals and arrested 87 suspects.(Xinhua)
