SHARES in soccer side AS Roma fell sharply on Monday after the Italian first division leaders lost 1-3 to Fiorentina to record only their third league defeat of the season.
This match was the first ever time a market-quoted club — in this case Roma — had played a match while trading was open and traders tuned in to follow the action.
Normally matches are contested at weekends or during the evening when trading is suspended but fears of crowd trouble had led organizers to playing the match on Monday afternoon in the hope that work commitments would dissuade Roma fans from travelling to Florence.
Shares fell four per cent to 6.188 euros, slicing almost 12 million euros — four million euros per shot in the Roma goalkeeper's net — from the club's bourse value after the shares had peaked at 6.47 euros just three days ago.
Stock prices had fluctuated during the match itself.
When Brazilian midfielder Emerson notched an equalizer for Roma in the first half the shares went up by one per cent.
But Roma's French defender Vincent Candela's own goal — leaving Fiorentina 2-1 ahead — saw the price fall by 0.28 per cent.
Enrico Chiesa's final goal for Fiorentina, which killed off hopes that Roma could grab a draw, saw the price fall heavily by five per cent to 6.11 euros before rallying slightly. (SD-Agencies)
