New highway opens

THE much-anticipated new expressway reaching to the previously barely-accessible eastern regions of Shenzhen finally opened on Monday.
After an inauguration ceremony, the first cars roared down Section A of the Yantian-Bagang Expressway.
The expressway, once fully completed, will run 29km along the “golden beach" in eastern Shenzhen. The newly-completed section runs 10km from Yantian to Xichong.
The beaches in the city's east have long been popular getaways for Shenzheners during the summertime. Unfortunately, the only access to the beaches of Dameisha and Xiaomeisha has been along a dangerous, winding two-lane road that, just to make matters worse, was subject to massive traffic jams on weekends and holidays.
Hopefully, the new six-lane expressway will relieve this agonizing situation. The highway's designers say the trip from Yantian Port to the beaches, which previously could take two hours or more on weekends, will now take a mere five minutes.
Vice-Mayor Zhuo Qingrui said at the opening ceremony that besides the “golden beaches", the expressway will greatly benefit the ports and industrial bases in the region.
“Investors are welcome to eastern Shenzhen. We will reward them with a better investment environment. And we want them all to make rich profits," Zhuo said.
