CHINA'S Legend Group, the top computer and Internet firm in the country, launched its southern arm Legend (Shenzhen) Electronics Company, its first branch located outside Beijing, in the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park on Friday.
Senior Vice-President of Legend Yang Yuanqing said that the new company will serve Legend's southern centre of research, development, production, marketing and customer support.
"This is a strategic move by Legend to localize its products and services to better serve customers in different regions.
"We believe that Shenzhen will enable us not only to access the southern market in China but also the vast overseas market," Yang said.
This also marks an important step in expanding Legend's presence in Shenzhen. Earlier, the company acquired a controlling stake of yestock.com, a leading financial website, for over US$35 million to consolidate its leadership in financial service-related mobile computing devices.
Experts say that the new establishment in Shenzhen will change Legend's geographical configuration, enabling it to better customize their services.
According to Yang, the company's investment totalled 400 million yuan (US$48 million) by the year 1999. Legend's new facility in SZ was built last year.
Legend has topped the computer sales list in China for four consecutive years. Last year Legend scored the best sales record in the Asian Pacific computer market. The US-based Business Week news magazine placed Legend among the world's top 10 information technology firms.
