Jiang's visit strengthens ties

CHINA has strengthened its relations with Latin America through President Jiang Zemin's six-nation tour of the region, a senior Chinese official said in Caracas, capital of Venezuela on Tuesday.
The Chinese president's “historic and fruitful" visit has pushed forward the comprehensive development of friendship and co-operation between China and Latin America in the new century and will help establish a just and rational new international political and economic order, said Li Zhaoxing, Chinese deputy foreign minister.
Li made the remarks while President Jiang is winding up his visit to Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela starting from April 5.
In an address delivered in Chile at the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Jiang said that China is willing to make joint efforts with Latin America to accelerate the development of the long-term, stable and mutually beneficial bilateral ties.
Leaders of six Latin American countries hailed Jiang's proposals, which they said will vigorously boost the friendship and co-operation between China and Latin America, Li said.
Jiang also called on developing countries to strengthen South-South co-operation as well as actively participate in North-South dialogue in order to improve world peace and development, Li added.
During his visit, the Chinese president exchanged views with the Latin American leaders on international and regional issues, saying that multi-polarization conforms to the principle of democracy and will do good to the maintenance of world stability and the balanced development.
All countries are equal regardless of their strength, size and wealth and should adhere to the basic principles of the international laws, Li quoted Jiang as saying.
Jiang's visit also enhanced the mutual trust and economic and trade co-operation between China and the six Latin American countries, which backed China's early entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), the deputy foreign minister said.
The leaders of the six countries said their countries adhere to the one-China policy and support China's efforts to resolve the Taiwan issue under the principle of “one country, two systems," Li stressed.(Xinhua)
