GZ population grows

THE population of Guangzhou, capital city of South China's Guangdong Province, totalled nearly 10 million by November 1, 2000, ranking only after four municipalities of Chongqing, Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin, the Guangzhou Daily reported on Wednesday.
The total population of the city has increased by 57.83 per cent to 9.94 million in the past decade, according to census figures released by the Guangzhou Statistics Bureau, the paper said.
The increase is attributed to the influx of migrant workers from inland provinces, as the city enjoyed quick and bustling economic development after it implemented reform and opening-up policies.
The city had 7.026 million permanent residents by November 1, 2000, an increase of 19.02 per cent from the last census about 10 years ago. The growth of the permanent residents has been brought under control, the report said.
Core families are replacing big families with several generations living together thanks to the implementation of the family planning policy. Like other major cities in China, Guangzhou also faces the growth of ageing population.
As compared with the figure released in the 1990, the number of illiterates and semi-illiterates has declined from 0.437 million to 0.23million.(Alfred Zhang)
