Powering cars of the future
|
Liu Fuzhong
ONLY a few years ago, cars powered by electricity existed only in the laboratory. But thanks to new rechargeable Lithium-ion battery technology developed by Shenzhen-based Thundersky Green Power Source Co Ltd, this futuristic mode of transportation has actually emerged from the realm of science fiction.
In fact the company's new electric car caught quite a lot of attention at the International Electric Car and Clean Energy Technology Show recently held in Beijing.
According to Zhong Xinjia, managing director of Thundersky, one cell can keep a car running 400 kilometres at 26.8 yuan (US$3) per charge.
Engineers with Thundersky say that their electric car does not compromise on the performance people would expect from a car powered by internal combustion.
The new electric car is the first of its kind developed by Chinese scientists.
After rigorous testing and examination, experts say that both the Lithium-ion cell and the car itself are at the cutting-edge of their technological areas.
According to Zhong, the company plans to launch mass production of Lithium-ion cells in three years.
Thundersky is one of the few companies in China with proprietary technology to produce high-voltage Lithium-ion cells.
The company has also demonstrated other technologies which apply the Lithium-ion cells to other vehicles like city buses and motorcycles.
