Academician calls to downplay SCI
|
AN academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) said on Tuesday that his fellow researchers should not be led by the nose by Science Citation Index (SCI) when they are doing academic studies.
Cai Ruixian, also a senior official of the State Natural Science Fund Committee (SNSFC), suggested that China should establish its own effective appraisal mechanism for scientific achievements, rather than just using SCI or Engineering Index (EI) as only touchstones.
The US-based non-governmental Institute of Scientific Information compiles the index, in order to make worldwide researchers convenient for finding specific topics.
Cai, a well-known specialist of engineering thermo physics, said that most of the authoritative scientists in the world don't think citations of their own thesis have any special meaning.
"The citation of SCI and EI does not represent the success of papers themselves," said the 67-year-old physicist, who created the comparative methodology for analyzing complex general energy system, which won the National Scientific Progress and CAS awards.
However, some Chinese media usually fall over themselves for listing top domestic universities and institutes in accordance with their citation chances.
"China's basic scientific research could not be influenced by SCI, EI or some others of this kind," said Cai.(Xinhua)
