11 people missing as ship sinks

ELEVEN crew members are missing after a ceramics-laden Chinese cargo ship based in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province sank following a collision with another vessel in Dapeng Bay off southeastern Shenzhen on Wednesday.
Only two of 13 crew of the Nanjing-registered "Sitong 888" were rescued by a passing ship after the collision with the "Tongning No 3". The latter had by then departed to the north.
The SZ Municipal Maritime Affairs Bureau instantly dispatched rescuers in speedboats, launches and helicopters to search the site of the incident.
The cause of the collision was not known, according to local newpapers.
The two rescued crew members said the "Sitong 888" was on its way to Jiangyin in eastern Jiangsu Province after loading in Foshan, some 200 kilometrers (124 miles) northwest of Hong Kong. The crew were asleep when the collision occurred. Finding that their own ship was sinking, the crew called to the "Tongning No 3" for help, but the calls were reportedly ignored, and the unscathed ship fled the scene. Within just a few minutes, the "Sitong 888" sank with all but two hands on board.
No trace of the missing crew members has been found, but the search is continuing. The municipal maritime affairs bureau has asked counterparts all over the country to look for the "Tongning No 3".(SD-Agencies)
