Service trade
GUANGZHOU: Guangdong Province in South China will move faster to open the service trade in a bid to gain experience for China's foreseeable entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Zhao Yufang, deputy head of the provincial department of foreign trade and economic co-operation, said that overseas investors will soon be allowed to operate jointly-financed or solely invested travel agencies, cinemas, railway and air transport businesses.
In the meantime, the experiment of allowing overseas investment in intermediate businesses ranging from accounting offices, evaluation organizations, supervisory companies, to legal consulting firms will be further expanded to make way for a full opening-up of these businesses.
Post-doctorates
BEIJING: China's post-doctorate researchers will number 12,000 to 15,000 by the year 2005, almost twice the current figure, Zhang Xuezhong, Minister of Personnel said on Friday at a national meeting on post doctorates.
China's post-doctorate system started in 1985. At present the country has set up 947 post-doctorate working stations in 310 universities and institutes across the country, covering 12 major scientific fields.
Villas reopen
QINHUANGDAO: More than 100 elegant villas at Beidaihe, the most famous resort in north China's Hebei Province, are now reopen to the public after a facelift.
Established as a summer resort in 1898, Beidaihe turned into an ideal resting place for government officials and about 700 villas were built before 1949.
In the 1950s the resort became a tourist destination and the government has funded renovation work several times on the resort,which is about six hours by train from the Great Wall and has now become a pillar for the local tourism industry.
