Letters to the Editor

Sir-The Chinese Government has won a victory over the United States when the 57th session of the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva declared a "no-action motion" proposed by China last week. The United States' fabricated and instigated anti-China attempt was thus foiled for the 10th time. This testifies the inconvertible truth: Implementing power politics under the pretext of human rights can only be doomed to failure.
The strong desire of the USA to call the shots and pursue hegemonism promotes its intervention into other countries' internal affairs in the guise of human rights. The USA, which intends to damage China's international image and sow discord, occasionally launches malicious attacks on China's human rights conditions. It turns a blind eye to human rights achievements made by China in recent years, and remains ignorant of the fact that China is enjoying the best human rights situation in its history. Incredibly, Washington even defends the notorious evil cult "Falun Gong," which has been blamed for the deaths of so many of its practitioners.
The US standards of human rights are nothing more than a double standard. The United States should look at itself first, for its human rights record leaves a lot to be desired. It is well known that the United States faces serious human rights problems at home such as racial discrimination, police violence and money politics. The Cincinnati tragedy, in which an unarmed black citizen was shot dead by a white police officer triggered severe racial violence, and stands as an ironic comment on that country's self-proclaimed status as a "human rights defender".
More and more countries are expressing their indignation at US arrogance and presumptuousness on human rights. The US was totally isolated before the UN Commission on Human Rights: they failed to get anyone to speak for them and had to come out from behind the scenes to do the job themselves.
