A MUSICAL gala lit up the nights in Shenzhen on Saturday, bringing some of China's top singing stars to perform at the city's Grand Theatre. Almost 200 security guards were called in to watch over the talent, along with over 100 journalists, all come to witness the opening ceremony of the Music Competition Awards.
The four-and-half hour gala served up performances by pop sensations from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the mainland, including Andy Lau, Na Ying and Cai Qin. Awards were given to the ten best-received pop songs as well as 20 pop stars.
Interestingly, no tickets were sold for the gala: all seats were filled by pop stars, agents and other celebrities, thus explaining the heavy security presence. None of the well-dressed stars knew in advance who the winners would be, following a formula familiar to viewers of Western awards shows.
According to Li Delai from Beijing Enlight TV, the main sponsor, Shenzhen was chosen as the host city for because, for one thing, it is an immigrant city with young population which adores pop music. Secondly, Shenzheners can easily accept the pop culture from northern China along with music from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
