The beautiful hoopoe
|
戴胜羽毛艳丽,头上有羽冠,有时竖起张开,好像一把扇子。嘴细长弯曲,能伸进树木和岩石的缝隙中捕食昆虫。是农业益鸟。它的名字hoopoe源于它的鸣叫声。
HOOPOES (戴胜) have long, thin and decurved (下弯的) bills, broad round wings, square tails crossed by a wide white band and long erectile (可竖立的) crests (羽冠).
Hoopoes have three species. All species have dramatic black and white wing patterns (the patterns vary between the species) that show when the bird is preening (梳理).
Hoopoes appear superficial to be birds of the trees, but they spend most of their foraging (搜寻食物) time on the ground, probing the leaf-litter.
Hoopoes are exotic in appearance, but they are open-country (旷野) birds and do not occur in dense jungle.
Witherby's (1943) description of the Hoopoe's behaviour is very comprehensive: "Feeds mainly on ground, walking with ease with accompanying movement of head. Fond of feeding on lawns and path or, alternatively, on manure (肥料), probing for larvae, etc. Crest depressed when at rest, but erected when excited or alarmed and for a moment on settling. Flight is not weak and uncertain as it appears, for it will readily elude trained falcons (猎鹰), mounting easily into the air away from them. Perches in trees, as well as on buildings, walls, etc, and according to Lilford will occasionally climb up tree like a woodpecker (啄木鸟), but this is not usual. Fond of dust and sand baths."
