Revised law subjects infidelity to compensation
|
NEW amendments to China's Marriage Law are expected to be approved by lawmakers on Saturday, with revised articles subjecting infidelity to compensation.
The amendments, targeting a growing legion of disloyal husbands who keep mistresses either secretly or openly, prohibit bigamy and cohabitation with third parties by a married person.
Analysts said, in clarifying legal liabilities for infidelity, the amendments subject married people living with others to civil compensation if such cohabitation results in a divorce.
The 21st meeting of the National People's Congress Standing Committee began third reading of the amendments yesterday.
Li Peng, chairman of the committee, said top lawmakers will decide whether or not to put the amendments to vote for adoption before the meeting closes.
Chinese lawmakers and the general public have been debating on issues of bigamy or keeping mistresses, domestic violence and family property separation upon divorce.
In not more than 50 days after the top legislature publicized the draft amendments to solicit opinions earlier this year, it has received a total of 3,829 letters and calls from the public.(SD-Xinhua)
