Spreading the word on patents

Wu Yan
MANY of China's companies and individuals are still not aware of the importance of patent registration, a gap in knowledge which in many cases winds up costing them dearly.
In an effort to fill this gap, Jiang Ying, former chief of the China Intellectual Property Bureau, addressed a local audience on the subject of intellectual property protection on Monday.
She cited a certain Wan Yan institute which many years ago created the world's first VCD but failed to have it patented. Then many VCD producers sprouted up across the country, fiercely competing with one another. At the same time, Jiang said, nobody, then or now, has ever heard of a Wan Yan, the originator of the product.
"Patenting is an important part of intellectual property. Its registration determines the market you are targeting," Jiang said.
Jiang suggested reforming the country's present system of administrating inventions and innovation to let creators gain greater benefits from the marketing of their work. She also urged governments at different levels, companies and individuals to pay more attention to protecting intellectual property.
