GUANGDONG corruption investigators had a busy start to the year, probing 540 cases involving 606 government and company officials in the first quarter of this year, the Yangcheng Evening News reported on Wednesday.
“Serious" cases accounted for 72.2 per cent of the total dealt with by the Guangdong People's Procuratorate. This was a higher proportion than in previous years, the paper said.
Sixty-four officials at the county-level departments or higher are among those investigated in the first quarter. The procuratorate recovered State assets valued at 326 million yuan (US$39.12 million)
The Guangdong People's Procuratorate reported a steep rise in the number of cases involving the so-called “three organs and one department" --- party, administrative and judicial organs and economic management departments.
More than 220 officials from these bodies were investigated, representing a year-on-year increase of 28 per cent.
The procuratorate noted that the size of bribes was increasing. Of 153 people investigated for offering bribes, three-quarters offered amounts of more than 50,000 yuan --- including four above one million yuan. Most cases involved construction or sales contracts.(SD-Agencies)
