Competitiveness improved
|
A SPOKESMAN for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government on Wednesday welcomed the improvement in Hong Kong's overall ranking of competitiveness by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD).
According to the publication of the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2001 by the IMD in Switzerland on Wednesday, Hong Kong's ranking rose to the 6th position in 2001 from the 12th in 2000.
“I am glad that Hong Kong's efforts in reviving the economy and in enhancing our competitive edge have produced positive results," the spokesman said. “The IMD acknowledged fully Hong Kong's strong economic performance in 2000, describing the 10.5 per cent real GDPgrowth as remarkable."
“As recognized by IMD, low corporate and individual tax rates, flexibility in labour regulations and entrepreneurship will continue to underpin Hong Kong's competitiveness as a place of doing business," the spokesman said.
Noting the IMD comments that “the battlefield for world competitiveness is moving to Bytes and Brains", the spokesman affirmed Hong Kong's continued commitment to upgrading human capital, ensuring adequate supply of the right talents, putting inplace the best infrastructures for a knowledge-based economy and harnessing the latest developments in IT.(Xinhua)
