Illegal weapons burnt
|
ABOUT 3,000 guns and over 4,000 knives were thrown into a burning smelter in the Guangzhou Iron and Steel Plant on Wednesday in the city's greatest campaign to eliminate illicit weapons --- guns in particular --- organized by Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau.
Since the implementation of the Firearms Management Decree of the People's Republic of China in 1996, the city's public security bureaus of different levels have been engaged in capturing illegal guns. And each year sees two grand burnings of the captured weapons. By September 2000, a total of nearly 8,000 guns had been seized.
With an increase of gun-related crimes since last year, Guangzhou Public Security Bureau has taken forceful measures to take in the illegal weapons. It has warned those gun owners not to take chances and hand over the weapons as soon as possible, not to be penalized in accordance to relevant laws otherwise.(Wu Yan)
