Woman daubs British submarine
|
A BRITISH woman has defied military security at a Scottish nuclear submarine base by swimming into its compound and daubing one of the vessels with paint, the defence ministry said on Saturday.
A ministry spokesman said the security breach happened at Faslane naval base on the River Clyde shortly before 6.00am (0500 GMT) on Friday.
He said it appeared the woman, apparently an anti-war activist, had swum for a few hours before reaching the Trident submarine. She was arrested just after she began to splash paint on its hull.
"This was an irresponsible act because she could have put the safety of MoD (defence ministry) police at risk if she had got into trouble in the water," a spokesman said.
"We do have good security at the base, but no security is impenetrable. There will be a thorough investigation," he said.
Last September, seven anti-nuclear demonstrators were arrested as they tried to force their way into the Barrow-in-Furness base in northwest England where the navy was launching its fourth Trident nuclear submarine.(SD-Agencies)
