International folk dances staged in city

LIKE the night of the Overseas Chinese Town is not splendid enough with only the grand presentations staged in the China Folk Culture Villages and Window of the World, foreign artistic troupes sometimes join the colourful night by staging performances at the Huaxia Art Centre. Last weekend the city saw a dance performance full of exotic folk culture presented by the New York Allnations Dance Company.
From charming Ukraine traditional dances to hot Hawaii hula-hula (a Polynesian dance), from mysterious Egyptian palace dance to wild Gipsy flamenco, from joyful Chinese celebration to delighting Philippines bamboo-pole dance, the vibrant display of melody and action from the Allnations really brought the audience to an exotic world.
"The show is about highly professional dancing. It is exotic, colourful and funny...", Zhang, an old gentleman in late fifties commented. He was one of the many audiences that stick to the show till the last minute and applauded to the beat of dances occasionally.
But there were disappointing audiences. Frankly speaking the performance was not a glorious one. No magnificent stage settings, no resplendent costumes, and, with only nine dancers, the lineup was definitely not a strong one if you compare it with that in the Window of the world.
Mr Yi Kun, vice manager of the marketing department of the Hua Xia Art Centre, admitted that the performing group was too small for such a large stage, making the show a little dull. And Huang, one of the audiences left at intervals claimed that the show was a disappointment to her because the performance was not as excellent as she had expected. Obviously the thing that had won the Allnations millions of audience around the world, the superb dancing skill of the dances, as claimed by the dance company, had failed to win her heart.
This is the second visit of the company to China. Founded in 1963, the New York Allnations Dance Company has visited over 50 countries in five continents with the mission to spread the message of understanding and appreciating different cultures. Their last show in China was 15 years ago in 1986.
