Overseas students lured back

SHENZHEN'S recent effort to recruit overseas Chinese students studying in the United States attracted not only Chinese students but also Americans.
Shu Xin, general manager of a local pharmaceutical company, brought a US$200,000 job offer with him when he went on a recruitment tour of four US cities organized by the Shenzhen Municipal Government earlier this month. An American who holds doctor's degrees in medical science and business administration is reported to be "the most hopeful" candidate for the offer.
The recruitment tour, headed by vice-mayor Li Decheng, attracted a total of 3,000 overseas Chinese students, most of whom aged between 30 and 40 and are leading a relatively stable life there. Chen Xueshi, from Pennsylvania, said Shenzhen holds great attraction for overseas students because of its rapid development, favourable geographical position, mild climate and enviable job benefits.
Chen Anren, director-general of the Shenzhen Municipal Personnel Bureau and one of the organizers of the US tour, introduced that this year's overseas recruitment effort is the largest ever for the city since 1992.
