HOTEL operators in Shenzhen have reason to be happy these days, thanks to the river of tourists flowing into the city during the May Day holidays. In order to entertain these visitors, not to mention the locals who choose to stay put, SZ has prepared a number of festive activities. These activities are a sign that our city has matured from a boomtown into a popular tourist destination, according to Chi Xiongbiao, deputy director-general of Shenzhen Municipal Tourism Administrative Bureau.
“We are aiming at building SZ into a world-renowned tourism city in the next decade," Chi Xiongbiao said, flashing a confident smile. “We are going to implement a series of strategies to reach our goal."
First, Chi says, the city must build up an integrated image of itself to promote its popularity and attraction. Chi said they will promote Shenzhen as “a new city for the new century and a window on China". “SZ brings you new hope everyday" will be the official motto for this publicity effort.
More than mere words, though, city officials are mapping out a new approach to tourism.
“To reach our goal, building up a new concept about tourism resources is as important as our strategies," Chi said. “Whatever will interest tourists, from shopping and entertainment to historical sites, should be considered a tourism resource."
In other words, tourism looks set to become one of the pillars of Shenzhen's economy, one in keeping with the city's image as a glittering, cutting-edge metropolis.
