Sleeping apples
|
Song Yingwen
IT was the spring festival and my friend Mary was having a grand party at her place. Since it was the first time that her little girl, who was six, had a chance to meet so many uncles and aunties she'd never seen before, she was extremely excited.
She was the only child there, but she was not lonely at all. Her brightness and cuteness caught the fancy of everyone and for the whole night, she sang, danced and presented us with all the lovely games she's learned at school. The little girl was so excited that she forgot her bedtime.
Then her mother came to bring her to sleep.
"But mother, everybody is still having fun. Why can't I stay a little longer?" Like every child who refuses to leave when having a jolly good time, the girl pleaded for an exception.
"Because you are a child, you need sleep," Mary explained patiently.
The girl made several other attempts but failed, and at last she grumbled with tears in her eyes: "I want an apple before I go to bed!"
"No, you can't," Mary replied, as she firmly believes that parents should never compromise with their children. Still, she didn't want to upset her child, so she said: "It's too late, all the apples have gone to sleep."
"No, only the small ones have gone to sleep," the girl cried. "All the big ones are still awake!"
