Flower design maturing

DESPITE the fact that the booths of international exhibitors at the First China International Flower Assortment Expo under way in the China Hi-Tech Exhibition Centre have won more applause from visitors than their competitors from China, Zhong Weixiong holds the opinion that the works of the Chinese exhibitors also deserve applause.
Zhong is representative of the Holland-based Boerma Institute International Flower Design School.
“Though the Chinese companies lag behind in creativity, you can tell from their works that they are working in the direction of preserving their own style while absorbing new ideas. This is a very good sign," Zhong said after scrutinizing the works of some Chinese attendants.
Originally from Hong Kong, Zhong teaches at the Boerma Institute, an international flower design school in Holland and a school, incidentally, that has provided and arranged flowers for European royalty since 1863. He engaged himself in teaching flower design in China six years ago when flower design was little known, and he says the industry is now flourishing in China.
“From the difficult times when few materials were available for flower assortment to today's grand expos, this industry is growing fast in China," Zhong said.
The restrictive elements that are holding back the development of flower design in China, according to Zhong, are the lack of innovation in design and application of materials.
“Only frequent communication with the outside world can help us in developing new ideas and updating information, but to develop your own style while learning is just as important. Expos like this give me and my students the best chances for study."
Being an experienced designer, Zhong frequently travels to flower design exhibitions and expos all over the world. He says the Shenzhen flower design expo is of a high standard.
“Both the design of the exhibition hall and the quality of exhibited works have impressed us deeply. It marks a great improvement in the designing industry in China," commended Zhong. He sincerely hopes the expo will draw more attention from foreign flower companies and thus help to promote the further development of flower design in China.
