7 die in toxic well
|
SEVEN people died in southern China while trying to rescue each other out of a water well, not realizing it was filled with odourless and colourless poison, the Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when one man, identified as Ding Yonghua, accidentally fell into the well in a village in Baiyun district, Guangzhou, capital city of South China's Guangdong Province.
Five of Ding's relatives then followed each other into the well, each one going down after the others failed to emerge, the daily said.
A security guard at a nearby road project was summoned to help but he too succumbed to the deadly poison.
The victims included a husband and wife, the report said.
With the seven people in the well, villagers finally called for police help, but rescue work could not be immediately carried out until exhaust fans and oxygen tanks were brought in.
Police eventually pulled the bodies out of the well.
Authorities were still investigating the cause of the death yesterday, but it was believed the well was filled with colourless and odourless poisonous fumes.(SD-Agencies)
