Students flock to NCEE tips

MAY Day, a time for travelling, gathering and relaxing, is also a time for intense studying, at least for students nervously hoping to fight their way into China's top universities despite fierce competition.
In a rare move, a lecture was recently given by the first-place writers of the National College Entrance Examinations (NCEEs) enrolled by Beijing University, plus experts on the NCEE. Tickets sold out in a few hours. The organizer, the Shenzhen Special Zone Press Group and Golden Field Industries Inc, had to add an extra lecture the following day to meet the demand.
Those who failed to get tickets gathered at the Auditorium Hall of the Shenzhen Special Zone Press Tower, the venue for the lectures, an hour early, hoping to snag a ticket.
Four students of Beijing University who placed first in the previous two NCEEs were invited to offer tips on how to review lessons systematically, adjust mood and arrange time scientifically.
The lecture given by Liu Zhiyu, the NCEE expert of the Examination Centre of the Ministry of Education, was especially welcomed by teachers. Wang Zeng, a teacher at the Shenzhen Foreign Languages School who accompanied his son to the lecture on May 1, said his lecture on the tendency of 3+X examination will give teachers guidance on how to review lessons systematically.
“Though children had more opportunities to study at universities with the recent expansion of admission," said Wang, “parents still expect their children to enter prestigious universities and, thereby, to have a better social position in society."
“Peers' experience is more persuasive than parents' preaching," said a teacher from Luohu Foreign language School. He added that the lectures were effective than teachers' lessons. But Ma Xin, a postdoctoral researcher in psychology, wondered whether the success stories of a few students, which can only be used as references at best, should be promoted and popularized.
